SunShot Prize: Race to the Rooftops
America’s Solar Soft Cost Prize Competition

The College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering (CNSE) hosted a workshop on behalf of the Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative entitled SunShot Prize: Race to the Rooftops on April 10, 2013. The event was held at the CNSE’s Albany Nanotech Complex in Albany, NY.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the SunShot Prize challenges the ingenuity of America’s businesses and communities to make it faster, easier, and cheaper to install rooftop solar energy systems. This competition offers a total of up to $10 million in cash awards to the first three teams that repeatedly demonstrate an average of $1 per watt (W) for non-hardware costs such as customer acquisition, finance, permitting and interconnection.

The SunShot Prize Workshop focused on solar soft cost challenges and how the SunShot Prize can help spur business innovation.

The event focused on the following topics, featuring experts and stakeholders in each area:

  • Spurring Technology/Business Innovation for PV Implementation
  • Challenges in Customer Acquisition & Finance
  • Innovation in Installation, Permitting & Interconnection
  • Brainstorming: New Business Models and Winning Scenarios
