College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) student Shelia Smith, a sophomore majoring in nanoengineering, is the first in her field to receive the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.
The scholarship is the nation's premiere award for outstanding undergraduate students in the field of science, mathematics and engineering. Smith was one of only 300 students to receive the award.
"I sent in an essay, two letters of recommendation and some info on the research I was doing but I never expected to win," she said. "I found out I won through one of my classmates emailing me saying congratulations."
