Business Review: Nanocollege student wins prestigious Goldwater scholarship
Sheila Smith, a sophomore majoring in nanoengineering at the University at Albany’s nanocollege, has been named a recipient of a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.
UAlbany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering said the award provides $15,000 in funding for Smith’s study over the next two years. The scholarship is considered one of the most prestigious undergraduate awards for scientific study. Fewer than 300 students receive the award nationally.
Smith is the first recipient to win in the field of nanotechnology. She is conducting research in new materials and processes to enhance speed and energy efficiency in devices such as laptops and cell phones.
